What is involved in stone benchtops?
Stone benchtops are the single biggest visual upgrade you can make in a kitchen renovation. Across Adelaide, engineered stone (Caesarstone and Smartstone are the most common brands) covers about 70 percent of new installs. Natural stone covers about 20 percent. Laminate, timber, and porcelain cover the remaining 10 percent.
Engineered stone is manufactured from crushed quartz aggregate (90-95 percent by volume) bound with polymer resin (5-10 percent). It is poured into sheets, cured, polished, then cut and templated to your kitchen. The benefits are uniform pattern, large sheet sizes (up to 3.4m x 1.6m), no resealing required, and consistent pricing.
After national regulatory changes in July 2024, only low-silica engineered stone products (below 80 percent silica content) are permitted in Australia. Caesarstone, Smartstone, Essastone, and Cambria have all reformulated their ranges to comply. The new low-silica products perform identically to the previous generation for the homeowner. The change is purely about workshop safety for stonemasons.
Natural stone offers character that engineered stone cannot. Each slab is unique. Granite is the most durable and the most heat-resistant. Marble is the most prestigious and the most maintenance-intensive. Dolomite sits between the two: stronger than marble, softer than granite, with marble-like veining at a 30-50 percent price discount to true Calacatta marble.
Edge profiles affect both look and price. Square edge is the modern standard. Mitred 40mm or 80mm thickness adds an architectural look at $200-$400 per metre extra. Waterfall ends (where the bench runs down to the floor at one or both ends of an island) cost $1,500-$3,500 per end. Pencil edge and ogee edge are traditional choices, typically $50-$120 per metre extra.

Reasons Adelaide homeowners book this service.
- Your laminate benchtop has burn marks, bubbling at the sink edge, and worn front edges.
- Every Adelaide showroom shows stone, and your laminate feels like a tier below.
- You are renovating and you want to know if Caesarstone is worth the premium over laminate.
- You have heard about engineered stone bans and you are not sure if Caesarstone is still legal.
How the work resolves it.
- Engineered stone (Caesarstone, Smartstone, Essastone): typically $700 to $1,200 per metre installed. 20 to 30 year design lifespan.
- Natural granite: $900 to $1,600 per metre. Heat-resistant, durable, occasional resealing required.
- Natural marble or dolomite: $1,200 to $2,200 per metre. Premium look, requires resealing every 2-3 years, more porous.
- Porcelain benchtops (Dekton, Laminam): $1,400 to $2,500 per metre. Indestructible, suit outdoor kitchens, expensive.
Stone Benchtops questions, answered.
Is engineered stone still legal in Adelaide?
Yes, fabrication and installation of low-silica engineered stone is permitted in South Australia under the national Safe Work Australia regulations introduced 1 July 2024. The previous high-silica products (above 80% silica) are banned. Modern products from Caesarstone, Smartstone, Essastone, and Cambria Quartz now use low-silica or silica-free formulations that meet the national standard.
How much does a Caesarstone benchtop cost in Adelaide?
A typical 6 to 7 metre Caesarstone benchtop installed in Adelaide costs $4,500 to $8,500. Pricing depends on the colour (entry-level colours are 30% cheaper than premium veined ranges), edge profile (square edge is standard, ogee or mitred costs extra), and template complexity (l-shape vs island vs both).
What is the difference between engineered stone and natural stone?
Engineered stone (Caesarstone, Smartstone) is manufactured from quartz aggregate bound with polymer resin. It is uniform in pattern, comes in consistent sheet sizes, and does not need sealing. Natural stone (granite, marble, dolomite) is quarried from the earth. Each slab is unique, may have natural fissures, and requires periodic resealing. Natural stone usually carries a 10-25 percent price premium.
Will marble stain in my kitchen?
Real marble (Calacatta, Carrara, Statuario) does etch and stain from acidic liquids like lemon, wine, and tomato. Resealing every 18-24 months reduces this. Homeowners who love the look of marble but want lower maintenance typically choose dolomite (Super White, Fantasy White) which is harder and more stain-resistant, or marble-effect engineered stone (Caesarstone Calacatta Nuvo, Smartstone Naomi).
