Overview

What is involved in cabinets?

Cabinetry is the largest single line item in a kitchen renovation, typically 40 to 55 percent of the total. The decision between modular and custom, between melamine and 2-pac, and between Australian-made and imported drives both budget and lifespan. Our matched cabinet makers walk you through the options.

Modular cabinetry is built from standard cabinet sizes (300, 400, 500, 600, 800, 900, 1000mm widths). It is fast to make, affordable, and suits 70 percent of Adelaide kitchens. The carcasses are usually 18mm melamine-faced particleboard or MDF, with PVC or ABS edge banding. The doors are typically melamine, vinyl-wrap, or thermofoil.

Semi-custom cabinetry sits between modular and full custom. Carcasses are modular but doors are made-to-order in custom sizes, custom profiles, or custom finishes. This is the sweet spot for many Adelaide kitchens: full-custom doors at semi-custom prices.

Full custom cabinetry is made from raw materials in an Adelaide workshop, exactly to the dimensions of your kitchen. It suits unusual room shapes, full-ceiling-height cabinets, bespoke internal fitouts, and premium finishes (hand-painted polyurethane, real timber veneer, fluted profiles, mixed materials in the same run).

Door profiles drive the kitchen's character more than any other element. Slab doors give a contemporary minimal look. Shaker doors (a recessed panel framed by stiles and rails) give a classic Hamptons-style look popular in Adelaide heritage cottages. Vintage shaker has visible bevel detail. Fluted or reeded profiles are the current trend for feature cabinetry (islands, larders, bar units).

FAQ

Cabinets questions, answered.

What is the difference between melamine and 2-pac cabinetry?

Melamine cabinetry has a thin printed paper laminate fused to a particleboard substrate, then sealed at the edges with PVC or ABS strip. It is durable, affordable, and the standard for modular kitchens. 2-pac (two-pack) polyurethane is sprayed liquid paint cured with a catalyst, giving a smooth, seamless, easy-to-clean finish that suits hand-painted custom kitchens. 2-pac costs 50-100 percent more than melamine.

How long do kitchen cabinets last?

Quality modular cabinetry (Polytec, Laminex, Australian Panels) lasts 15 to 25 years. Custom cabinet maker-built cabinetry from quality Adelaide workshops lasts 25 to 40 years. Imported flat-pack typically lasts 8 to 12 years before doors and hinges show wear.

Are drawers better than cupboards?

Yes, for most kitchen storage. Drawers give you full access to the contents from above. Cupboards require you to bend down and reach back, making the back half of the cupboard hard to use. The cost premium for drawers is about 15 to 25 percent per cabinet. Network renovators typically convert all base cabinets to drawers and reserve cupboards for wall units and pantry sections.

Should I choose Australian-made or imported flat-pack?

Our network is Australian-made only. Imported flat-pack cabinetry is widely available in Adelaide (Bunnings Kaboodle, IKEA Sektion, Allwood) but quality and longevity are typically lower than Australian-made. The cost saving is real (30-50 percent on cabinetry) but the trade-off is shorter lifespan and limited custom sizing.
